Depression and Neurotic Depression


In contrast to the normal person who becomes depressed under stress of the loss of a loved one. financial reverse , failure in a course, loss of a job or demotion. the neurotic has a tendency to blame himself or herself, or feel guilty in some way. It is as though. for the neurotic. the danger of "coming apart" increases. With the normal person, lessening or getting rid of the difficulty brings relief from depression; not so, :.he neurotic. Getting rid of the cause does not remove the depressed state. The normal person becomes aggressive in becoming adjusted to his or her problem rather than depreciating oneself as the neurotic does. Normal depression clears up quickly, whereas neurotic depression may last for weeks or months. It can clear up with or without t:reatment, but it is likely to recur. The following case history illus­wates the point.
