First dates can at times be a nerve-wracking and awkward experience for many. It will take plenty of mental and emotional preparation to handle a first date smoothly. Breaking the ice is probably one of the most difficult parts of the first date.
The idea is to not take the first date too seriously. You are just two people meeting and getting to know each other and seeing if there is any kind of connection. Try to have an open mind and instead of making a list of questions to ask a person, try to just understand them and really make an effort to engage in deep conversation with them.
Some questions you could ask to break the ice are “what is the funniest movie you have seen” or “what were you like when you were a child” to “how do you like to spend your weekends”, “what was your best vacation”, “what do you love to do more than anything else”, or “what really makes you laugh”. You can also use these sample questions to help you think of other starters on a first date.
However, there are some topics you should avoid, such as bringing up your ex or even your desires, such as getting married and having many children. You don’t want to either turn off your date or send them running for the hills by coming on too strong. Also, be careful of closing your mind by making statements like “I will never leave my home town” and so on. Just relax and enjoy the first date and be yourself. This experience doesn’t have to be a nerve-wracking one, but instead a relaxing one to find out if you are compatible with another person.
