Though online dating is a common thing in the modern world and is not looked upon as something vague anymore, it still possesses some danger for the singles looking to meet their Mr/Ms Right. We will once again cover the very important topic of online dating scams. You should bear in mind that these scams are real and that you can be the next target of scammers.
We’re all human beings with our own emotions and sometimes it happens that our emotions overwhelm our mind, especially when you have very deep feelings to someone. This is when the scam can happen and you will not even realize that you’re scammed. As a general rule, if you feel that you don’t want to share some personal information (your cell phone, home address, credit card number etc) – don’t do it! Meet that person in real, and only then think it over again.
We’ve got a list of several methods that scammers use to swindle you out of money, so be cautious next time you come across any of these signs:
- If a person you started communicating with on a dating site asks you to share your personal e-mail and continue to communicate there immediately, do not agree. It’s not a good idea to share your e-mail with everyone you barely know.
- Don’t fall for a person who claims to be in love with you at the first sight. Scammers usually use emotional ties to increase the chances of getting your money.
- Be cautious when a person who says he/she is a US resident but currently stays overseas. At least, until they don’t prove it’s true.
- If your match says that he/she plans to visit you but suddenly something tragic happened, it can be a scam.
- If your match asks you to pay for the travel expenses, there is a high probability that it is a scam.
- And, in general, if your new online friend asks for your money under any pretext (to pay for dating site subscription, business investment, medical care etc) – take your time and think it over once again. You should know that it’s really hard to get that money back if you decide to send it.
So, that’s it. Online dating is a lot of fun, and you have good chances of finding really good people there.
But taking care of your personal information and not giving too much of it away, will also help you stay with your money.
