Gym drills and lessons are often administered by a physical education teacher either in a regular school course or after-school program. While virtually any sport or activity can be performed in a gym, the majority of these activities emphasize aerobic fitness as well as coordination development. Gym drills and lessons range from relay races to balloon soccer juggling.
Passing Skill Drill
This drill is designed to improve your students' coordination as well as passing accuracy with a ball. Divide your gym class into two teams. Have one team stand in a straight line with about a foot of space between each player. Have the other group of kids stand on the opposite side, facing the first line. Stagger the lines so that each player in the second line is in a gap of the first line. On your whistle, have the first player in the first line pass the ball at a diagonal towards the first player in the other line. Have this player pass the ball to the second player in the first line. Each pass should be a chest pass. Continue this pattern until the ball moves all the way down the line.
Relay Race Drill
This drill is designed to emphasize teamwork as well as foot speed in your class. Divide your class up into two even teams. Have the teams line up on one end of the gym in straight lines. On your mark, have the first kid in each line sprint out towards the opposite side of the gym. Have her continue to run until she touches the wall. As soon as she touches the wall, instruct her to run back and tag the next player in her line. The first team to get everybody across wins.
Basketball Shooting Drill
This basketball shooting drill is designed to teach your kids proper form as well as technique while shooting a basketball. Have two kids stand under the basket to rebound the ball. From here, have the rest of the kids get in a straight line at the foul line. On your mark, have the first kid step up to the foul line and take a shot, making sure not to jump over the line during the release of the shot. Instruct the kid to hold the ball in front of his head with his arms and knees bent. As he brings the ball up to shoot, instruct him to release just above the head, fully extending his arm and following through with the wrist during the shot. Have each kid in line repeat until fatigued.
Balloon Soccer Juggling
This balloon soccer juggling drill is designed to improve your students' coordination, balance and focus. Give each kid in your class a balloon. From here, have them stand a few feet away from each other, making sure they have enough personal space to juggle the balloon. On your mark, have each kid drop the balloon towards the floor. Instead of letting it hit the ground, instruct them to kick the balloon up into the air, using the inner portions of their feet. Have each kid alternate back and forth between each foot until fatigued.
