In gymnastic parlance, rolling up refers to a forward half-circle that starts from the standing position. To roll up, you bend and put both hands down and pike or tuck as you bring both legs up. Unlike a forward roll with a handstand where your legs are together and continue over the top, you roll up to a handstand at an edge using a scissor kick. A pool or a boat dock is the safest place to learn how to roll up to a handstand at an edge.
Step 1
Bend forward at the waist and place both hands at the edge, shoulder width apart. Extend both legs straight back enough to elevate the middle of your back in a gentle curve.
Step 2
Bring one foot forward until that knee is bent in line with the middle of your upper body. At this point, your arms are straight and your weight is on both hands and the toes of your feet.
Step 3
Push off with your back foot and keep that leg straight as you bring it to the vertical. Immediately push off with your other foot, straighten that knee and use this leg as counter-balance to stop the forward momentum of your body.
Step 4
Continue holding the handstand and slowly raise your counter-balance leg until both legs are together in the vertical position.
Tips and Warnings
Practice rolling up in a headstand to learn the scissor technique with your legs.
