Working at Home and Financial Concerns

Whether you want to work from home because you just had a child, or you are tired of your commute, or maybe your boss, you need to go over the financial considerations of working at home to see if it is realistic for you. Other than finances, think about how you feel when it comes to giving up the contact that you have with co-workers, or the friendships you have made. Will you get the same satisfaction from working at home as you do from your present job?

If I Work at Home, Can I Make More Money?

If your present company will let you work from home at the same salary, you will actually see more money just from what you will be saving in commuting costs. If not, you will need to calculate the expenses of working outside of your home first. What are your financial considerations of working at home?

Health Care - Do you use a plan through your current job
Life Insurance - Are you covered at work
Disability Insurance - Are you taking advantage of this plan at work
Pension or 401K
Paid sick days
Paid vacation
Any bonuses
Now take into consideration what you will be eliminating by way of expenses if you can find legitimate work from home.

Day care
Transportation expenses - if you drive, consider wear and tear along with gas
Work clothes
Lunch
Taxes
Depending on what type of work from home job you can find, you may not make more money, but when you figure in what you will be saving it may work out to be the same as your current salary, if not more.
