In the real world it’s commonly known that mostly men are to do the first move – to start a conversation in a room, to ask for a first date or even to lean in for the first kiss. Are these customs broken on the internet?
One of the recent researches showed that virtual reality resembles the actual one when it comes to initiative in dating and flirting. Men are more likely to initiate the first contact online and it’s true all over the world. One more interesting fact – Spanish women are considered to be the most flirtatious in the world while American women are among the least flirtatious.
But why is it so and what do women lose when making the first move online?
In real life, at a bar or club, it’s very common that a man can start a conversation with you if you for example inspired him with a glance. And you’re leading this conversation because he is the one to make the first move and you can always say that you’ve got a boyfriend or that you’re not dating in clubs or whatever you want. And everyone knows the rules and is following them. It’s typical that men like to approach women more than to be approached.
At a dating site it’s quite different though. Just by simply signing up you’re already saying “Hey, I’m looking for a relationship and love” and it’s clear that the guys there are generally looking for the same. And it’s not the same as being present at a party or club (you might have come there for a drink or to spend time with your friends). So, the set of rules should be quite different if compared to real life. Then being present at a dating site already shows your intention to initiating contact. What’s the point then in ‘who’s going to make the first move’? Does it actually make sense?
What’s more, there are so many profiles of men and women on one site that he can probably just miss you. So, a simple message saying ‘Hi’ makes a lot of sense. You’re not losing anything if he doesn’t answer.
And if it’s the case when you come across a profile which greatly interests you? A smart photo, lots of similar interests and living nearby? If you’re going to wait until he writes to you, you can end up seeing his Facebook relationship status saying that he’s dating some other girl. But if you write to him first, the story can have a different ending. So, why not give it a shot?
