Soul Mates: Myth or Reality?
Have you ever met someone and felt as though you've known them all of your life? Have you ever gotten to know someone so well that you finish each other's sentences? Did you become close to a particular person really quickly? Have other people marveled at how close you and your partner are? If so, you may have found your soul mate. What is a soul mate? read on to find out.
Do Soul Mates Exist?
The idea of soul mates is pretty common. Many of us have spent a lot of time wondering if we'll ever meet the person who is perfect for us. Dating websites such as eHarmony make a killing off of the idea of soul mate relationships. Their whole hook is that they have extensive questionnaires to determine how compatible you are to a particular person. Many of the soul mate quiz pages are directed toward teenagers. That makes a lot of sense, since the teen years are often when people have their first experiences with love. Most women spent a lot of time as teenagers daydreaming about meeting the perfect guy--the soul mate we would spend the rest of our lives with. The record sales of pop boy bands among young girls show that the trend continues unabated today. Granted, soul mates quizzes generally aren't meant to be taken seriously and are more for entertainment, but they often do speak a bit of truth. We all dream of finding the one person that can truly understand us like no other. The question still remains, do soul mates exist?
For many people, the answer to this question depends on how you define "soul mate." One belief is that soul mates can exist, but they aren't always the kind you see in the movies or that young girls dream about. While a soul mate relationship can definitely be a romantic one, it doesn't have to be. For instance, a soul mate can be your best friend, your sister, or your mom. The whole idea of a soul mate relationship is that you feel a connection with someone that you can't quite explain. Is there a friend you met in a high school class who is still a big part of your life? Can you and your brother look at each other and each know what the other is thinking? The term, "soul mate," can apply to many types of relationships, both romantic and platonic.
Another question often asked is, can you have more than one soul mate? There are many different types of connections with other people, and humans tend to be pretty complicated. It's not much of a stretch to think that someone can have a soul connection with more than one person, but in different ways. The popular Twilight Saga books explore this concept. Perhaps the reason so many young girls (and let's face it, older women) like the books is because, like Bella Swan, they have felt a deep connnection to more than one boy at a time.
Overall, the question, "are we soul mates?" is one many people ask themselves when searching for a life partner. Even if you don't believe that this question has an answer, it can still be a fun one to ask! And remember, even soul mates have to work at their relationship. Anything worth having is worth working for.
