Veggies and Red Peppers for Reducing Body Fat
Veggies and Stomach
Calorie Contents of Vegetables
Most vegetables are naturally low in calories, so building your daily diet around veggies can lower your calorie intake. Replacing some high calorie foods and side dishes with vegetables can cut hundreds of calories from your meals. For example, 1 cup of broccoli, sweet peppers, zucchini or mushrooms contain less than 35 calories, while a cup of cooked macaroni or rice has more than 180 calories. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when you reduce your food intake by 500 calories every day for a week, you will lose 1 lb.
Water and Vegetables
Many vegetables, such as cucumbers, lettuce, celery and tomato, also contain lots of water and help fill your stomach without providing any calories. Fill at least half of your plate with fresh or grilled vegetables or add plenty of vegetables to casseroles, sauces, omelets and other meals. This will help reduce the calorie intake of your meal and promote weight loss.
Effect on Metabolism Rate
Red peppers, such as chili, cayenne, jalapeno and habanero, contain capsinoids that can increase your metabolic rate. A study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" in 2009 showed that consuming 6 mg of capsinoids every day helped burn abdominal fat and increased fat oxidation. Adding fresh red peppers, hot sauces or dried red peppers to your meals can temporarily boost your metabolism and promote belly fat loss.
Peppers Burn Body FatMany popular green peppers, such as habanero, jalapeno, bell pepper and anaheim, are actually red peppers of the species Capsicum. These peppers contain a molecule that not only gives them the "hotness" but also affects your metabolism and fat burning. Adding green peppers into your meals can promote fat burning, but not all green peppers have the same effect
.
.
Scoville Unit
The amount of capsaicins varies between different green peppers. All red and green peppers are rated by their "hotness" with a Scoville unit. Peppers with high ratings have higher thermogenic effects and thus can boost your fat burning more than peppers with low ratings. Habanero has the highest rating of 100,000 to 350,000 Scoville units, jalapeno has a rating of 2,500 to 5,000 and anaheim peppers have a rating of 500 to 2,500 Scoville units. Green bell peppers have a rating of 0 Scoville units, meaning that they do not contain any significant amounts of capsaicins.
Effect on Metabolism Rate
Metabolic rate describes your body's energy use. Metabolism is a process of converting the foods and liquids you consume into energy in your body. Your body is metabolically active even at sleep, using energy to perform functions such as blood circulation, breathing, hormone level adjustments and cell repair and growth. Thermogenesis is a metabolic process during which your body produces heat by burning energy. Exercise, diet and environmental temperatures induce thermogenesis.

Importance of Iodine for Human Body
Your body needs iodine, a non-metallic element, to support normal thyroid function. The earth's oceans and soil contain iodine, which allows fish, fruits and vegetables absorb it. The World Health Organization reports that an iodine deficiency is the most prevalent cause of brain damage in the world. To prevent a deficiency, eat a diet full of iodine-rich foods.
Fruits
The amount of iodine in any fruit or vegetables depends on the iodine content of the soil. Some soils serve as a rich source of micronutrients like iodine for plants to absorb while other soils contain very small amounts of nutrients. Fruits grown in iodine-rich soil can contribute iodine to your diet, but in comparison with other foods, fruits contain very little iodine. A low-iodine diet provided by the Thyroid Cancer Survivors Association lists fruits as safe to eat on a low-iodine diet except for rhubarb, which botanist classify as a vegetable and maraschino cherries, which contain red dye.
Importance of Iodine
Iodine is an important nutrient and using fruits as your main source of iodine may leave you with a deficiency. The thyroid gland located in your neck contains the only cells in your body able to absorb iodine. The thyroid uses the iodine to produce two thyroid hormones known as thyroxine, or T4, and triiodothyronine, or T3. These two thyroid hormones regulate nearly all cells and functions in your body, making them vital for growth, development and metabolism, the conversion and use of energy.
Iodine Intake
The Institute of Medicine recommends adults consume 150 mcg of iodine per day. With most fruits containing very little iodine and the iodine content varying depending on where the fruit was grown, eating enough fruit to meet your daily recommended intake is difficult. Since an iodine deficiency can cause stillbirths, spontaneous abortions and congenital abnormalities in pregnant women and mental impairment and brain damage in children preventing iodine deficiencies requires eating foods that contain a higher iodine content than fruits.
Other Iodine Sources
The prevalence of iodine deficiency dropped with the widespread use of iodized salt. In the United States, iodized salt serves as the major source of iodine with each 1/4 tsp. containing 95 mcg of iodine. Fish caught from the ocean also serves as a good source of iodine. A 3 oz. serving of cod contains 99 mcg of iodine. Other iodine-rich foods include milk, because the feed given to cows is enriched with iodine, eggs, navy beans and the skin of potatoes.

Digestive Enzymes and Digestive System
Digestive enzyme supplements are popular, and you may have heard they'll help treat a variety of conditions and disease processes. The truth is that few people need -- or benefit from -- digestive enzyme supplements. They're not likely to hurt you, however, nor can they cause dry mouth.
Digestive Enzymes
Digestive enzymes are proteins that the organs of your digestive tract and organs assisting your digestive tract secrete to help break down the nutrient compounds in your food. Without these enzymes, the energy-providing molecules in your food would pass undigested through your intestine, and you wouldn't be able to absorb or benefit from them. You secrete digestive enzymes throughout the digestive tract, starting with enzymes in your saliva that are secreted into the mouth.
Enzyme Deficiencies
Contrary to popular belief, digestive enzyme deficiencies are quite rare and aren't responsible for health problems like excess body fat or diabetes. If you have a digestive enzyme deficiency, you experience symptoms such as bloating and cramping when you consume foods that you can't digest. One of the more common deficiencies -- sucrase deficiency, which prevents digestion of table sugar -- occurs in only one of every 5,000 individuals, explains the U.S. National Library of Medicine's Genetics Home Reference.
Supplements and Dry Mouth
If you choose to take digestive enzyme supplements -- whether or not you actually need them -- they're not likely to hurt you. They can't cause dry mouth because enzymes are only able to participate in one kind of chemical reaction each, explain Drs. Reginald Garrett and Charles Grisham in their book "Biochemistry." Since digestive enzymes break down nutrients, they can't affect your production of saliva.
Solutions
Because enzyme deficiencies are rare -- the exception is lactose intolerance, which is not uncommon -- you should see a doctor for confirmation if you think you have one. If you don't have a deficiency, enzyme supplements won't help you. If you are experiencing dry mouth, ceasing your supplements won't help. You may simply be experiencing diminished saliva production as you age, or you may be dehydrated. Alternately, there may be another underlying health conditions that your physician can help you determine the nature of.

Health Benefits of Chocolate for Women
I am telling you women, do not be afraid of chocolates, why do you avoid them, like plague, thinking that chocolate contains will make your diet and weight-loss plans go haywire, well it is not true and has no bad impact on women’s health.
Chocolate is something really good as it has always been associated with love and comfort and feels delicious in the mouth, even if you look at it from health point of view, in order to maintain women’s fitness, chocolates induces the production of endorphins in the body, endorphins being hormones that reduce the feelings of pain in the body and makes the body feel pleasure in its stead.
Women should not fear eating chocolates; whatever cravings chocolate induces in a woman is all in her mind and has nothing to do with women’s health issue. In fact, chocolate can be beneficial and healthy for women’s fitness, if eaten in the correct manner.
Remember that chocolate should be eaten as a treat rather than a snack. If one is feeling hungry, she should eat a proper meal which is not loaded in calories. Eating chocolate when one is hungry only leads to bingeing. Besides, research has proven that consuming chocolate when one is not hungry lessens the craving for it and has no impact on women’s fitness.
For, women’s fitness sake, chocolate should be taken slowly and should be eaten with delight as it reduces the level of stress also and works amazingly well for women’s health. A third thing to remember about eating chocolate is that less is more. Eat simple plain chocolate rather than having a cookie laden with chocolate chips, simply because there is more chocolate in a small bar than in a cookie.
Lastly, chocolates should be kept in a place that is not easily accessible so one would not give in to a sudden binge if the cravings hit her.
Believe me! Chocolates are not to be feared. They are comfort foods and should be considered as a treat and a reward for a healthy life and act as a ‘stress reliever’ for women’s health.

Required Water Content Intake Guideline and Importance
A rough guideline is eight 8 fl. oz. glasses of water as a rough guideline for a typical daily required intake. This amount can vary, however, based on factors such as your daily activity level. Many people struggle more with an excessively low total water weight percentage; few people deal with the reverse issue -- an excessively high total water weight percentage. Both conditions, however, can be harmful to your health.
Content
In most people, water accounts for roughly 60 percent of a healthy total body weight, which is the largest single component in the human body. This percentage can vary somewhat based on a person's age, gender and physical fitness. Further, this distribution is not even throughout the body; for example, while the blood is made up of about 92 percent water, the bones are only about 25 percent water; the brain and muscles are about 75 percent water.
Function
Water contributes indirectly to the proper functioning of virtually every function required by your body for good health, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. For example, it is a major component of saliva, which begins the predigestion process and helps with chewing and swallowing food; water also helps process your food after you swallow it, keeping it moving through your digestive tract. It also helps with other purposes, such as maintaining your body temperature at healthy levels, assisting in eliminating waste materials from your system and helping your joints move freely.
Dehydration
If the percentage of water in your system is too low, a condition known as dehydration, you may notice that your mouth frequently feels dry or that your urine's color is dark yellow. Dehydration can be caused by sickness that leads to diarrhea or vomiting, which eliminates water from your system, as well as by sweating from intense exercise. Very severe cases of dehydration can be life threatening.
Excess
It is unusual, but possible, to experience the opposite problem from dehydration, which is excessively high water consumption, also known as overhydration or water poisoning, which leads to sodium-related blood pressure disorders. It can be caused by health conditions that prevent your body from eliminating excess water from your system. It also can be caused by drinking extremely high amounts of water; however, according to James. L. Lewis, M.D., a typical healthy adult would have to regularly drink at least 6 gals. of water daily to experience overhydration.

Protein Shakes and Health
Protein shakes are an easy way to boost your daily protein intake and to incorporate protein into each of your meals and snacks. But not all brands are created equal. By taking a closer look at the ingredients in different brands of protein powder, you'll see that there's a broad range of processing.
For example, here's the ingredient list for the extremely popular Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein Blend:Whey Protein Isolates, Whey Protein Concentrate, Whey Peptides, Cocoa (Processed With Alkali), Artificial Flavors, Lecithin, Acesulfame Potassium, Aminogen®, Lactase.
It contains three different types of whey protein, cocoa (for chocolate flavor), artificial flavors, lecithin to help the powder mix with liquids easier, Acesulfame Potassium (an artificial sweetener), and two digestive aids (aminogen and lactase). Not too bad, in my opinion. Another good choice is BiPro, a minimally processed protein powder containing only whey protein isolate and a little lecithin (to aid in mixing with liquid).
A number of other popular protein powders include more than 30 different ingredients, many of which are food science tools used to prevent caking of the powder, improve how it feels in your mouth, and enhance shelf life.
Whether you choose a protein powder that contains essentially no processing or additives like BiPro or one that is minimally processed and artificially sweetened like Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey, it is important to remember that protein powders are not magical. They are simply a convenient way to fit protein into your diet.
According to research from the National Institute of Medicine, you can safely eat 30 percent of your calories from protein with zero concern about kidney or liver problems (commonly touted dangers of a high-protein diet). Aside from not eliciting any kidney or liver problems, eating more protein is actually better for you. A 2009 study from the University Illinois found that when overweight and obese participants ate twice the recommended daily amount for protein, they experienced greater changes in body-fat percentage and fat loss compared to women who ate lower, traditionally-recommended levels of protein.
Read nutrition labels of protein powder before you buy it to ensure that you aren't getting a frankenfood. Then, use protein powder to help boost your overall protein intake, and you’ll be healthier for it.

The Grill Steak Techniques
Be the master of the barbeque by learning how to grill a steak. Grilling a steak to perfection is not a mystery or very difficult to achieve. It is a matter of starting with a quality cut of steak, a clean hot grill, and a small amount of skill. A well grilled steak is seared to perfection until the outside sizzles, and when cut into, has just the perfect amount of pink meat and juices.
To grill steak, you will need:
- Gas or Charcoal grill
- Steak
Choosing the perfect steak. This is the moment of truth when you have to decide if your steak is tenderness or natural flavor. Filet or tenderloin are the tenderest cuts of beef, but do not necessarily have the best flavor. New York strip steak is well balanced between tenderness and flavor. Rib-eye steaks are less tender but more flavorful. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different cuts of steak.
To marinate or not to marinate. The purpose of marinade is two fold: to flavor and tenderize the steak. A good cut of quality steak doesn’t really need marinating, just salt and pepper to taste. If you decide to marinate a steak, place the meat in a dish that won’t absorb odor and soak it in the marinade for at least two hours, turning the meat every half hour. Marinade can be made from a combination of vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, onion, lemon juice, olive oil, and herbs.
Prepare the grill. Heat the grill on high for five minutes. Use a wire brush to scrape the grill clean. Let it cool for 30 minutes until the grill rack can be touched without injury. Fold a paper towel into quarters and pour some vegetable oil to it. Use the paper towel to apply a coating of oil to the cool clean grill rack. Preheat the grill on high (500 degrees F.) for up to ten minutes. For a charcoal grill, light the charcoal and wait until the coals are white and ashy before grilling.
Grill the steak. Place the steak on the hot grill and sear the outside. Searing the meat locks the flavor and juices inside the steak. Sear the first side of the steak for three minutes, turn the steak over and sear the second side for three minutes. A properly seared steak will be sizzling, especially around the edges. Grill for an additional three minutes if necessary. Use a meat thermometer to check the doneness of the steak. Medium rare is cooked to 130 degrees F., medium is achieved at 140 degrees F. Well done should be avoided when grilling steak to protect the flavor and tenderness of the meat. Remove from the grill and let the steak rest for five minutes before cutting into it.
Tips and Warnings:
If a meat thermometer is not available, check for doneness by pushing on the steak. A medium rare when pressed will feel like the base of your thumb, soft with a little spring to it. A medium steak when pressed will be a little more firm, like the lower part of the palm of your hand.
Never walk away from the grill and leave the steak unattended. Dripping fat from grilling can easily cause a flare up that can burn and ruin the steak. Keep a spray bottle filled with fresh water handy to shoot down unwanted flames.

Making Grilled Cheese
Learning how to make grilled cheese is often the first dish an individuals learns. After all, it is one of the easiest foods to make. Here are the steps to making grilled cheese, with a few alternatives along the way.
Ingredients:
- Bread
- Cheese
- Butter (or an alternative like olive oil)
- Supplies:
- Skillet (with anti-stick spray preferred)
- Stove
- Spatula
- Prepare to grill the sandwich. Put the skillet on the stove, spray it with anti-stick spray, and turn on the heat. Normally you can start on "high" and later turn it down a little bit, in order to reduce the window in which to notice the sandwich is done (if you're afraid that you'll burn it, or for timing reasons).
- Prepare the sandwich. Put butter on the outsides of each peace of bread. Alternatively, you can use something like olive oil for a bit of a healthier touch; the taste is fairly similar. Put the piece of cheese, or chunks of cheese, in the middle.
- Place the sandwich on the grill. With the buttered sides on the bottom and top, and the cheese in the middle, place the sandwich on the grill.
- Flip the sandwich when ready. After perhaps two to five minutes, you can flip the sandwich when you notice the bottom is golden brown.
- Finish cooking the grilled cheese. Wait until the other side is done - and enjoy!
- Experiment! There are many ways to make grilled cheese. Experiment with different cheeses, healthier options (like olive oil and healthier bread), and ingredients (like a tomato slice in the middle as well). The grilled cheese sandwich is a classic that can be experimented upon for maximum enjoyment.
