Choosing the Women Bodybuilding Styles

Although women's bodybuilding may conjure images of massive physiques with masculine features and veins popping out from every muscle, this is only an accurate representation of traditional women's bodybuilding competition. More recently, two other forms have been introduced -- the fitness and figure categories, which value different aesthetics. Unfortunately there is still a certain stigma attached to women's bodybuilding, as well as issues regarding performance enhancing substances.
Traditional Bodybuilding
Male bodybuilding started to gather followers from the early part of the 20th century, but female bodybuilding did not really take off until the 1970s, writes bodybuilding photographer Bill Dobbins in his article "Women's Bodybuilding: A Revolution In Progress." Bev Francis, a former strong woman and powerlifting competitor, drove the movement. Her physique is considered by many to be the most muscular ever seen on a women's bodybuilding stage. Competitors are judged on their level of muscularity and body fat.
Fitness Bodybuilding
Fitness contests are the next step down from traditional bodybuilding, and are split into two subdivisions depending on height -- up to and including 163 cm, and over 163 cm. Competitors must wear a swimsuit or bikini and high heels, and are judged on their shape, definition, symmetry, and muscle mass, although they aren't expected to carry the same amount of muscle that female bodybuilders do. Competitors are also judged on their performance of an aerobic, gymnastic or dance routine.
Figure Bodybuilding
Figure competitions are a newer introduction, and a spin off from fitness bodybuilding. According to trainer and female bodybuilder Jen Heath, figure judges look for two things in competitors -- you should have an athletic look without being too muscular, and your muscles should appear toned and defined, with little fat covering them, yet still appear feminine. Figure competitions differ from fitness, as there is no performance round, and you are judged purely on your physique.
Which to Choose
For the average woman who wants to train hard and eat healthily while maintaining a normal work, social and family life, figure bodybuilding is the best option. If you are a keen gymnast, acrobat or dancer, then you may consider fitness as well. Traditional female bodybuilding should only be attempted if you want to dedicate yourself completely to the bodybuilding lifestyle.
