Step 1
Stand on a hard, smooth surface with your back against the wall and your feet 6 to 8 inches apart.
Step 2
Put a book spine between your legs, snug against your crotch. The book will act as a stand-in for the bike seat.
Step 3
Have a friend or family member measure from the top of the book down to the floor. Take three measurements to make sure you get an accurate measure. Record the number on a piece of paper.
Step 4
Buy a bike with a stand-over height 2 to 5 inches shorter than your inseam. Aggressive riders should choose a stand-over height 4 to 5 inches shorter than the inseam. Commuters and casual riders should look for a bike with a stand-over height 2 inches shorter than the inseam. The bike should be labeled with the stand-over height.
