What do Gymnastics Coaches Study in College?

Gymnastics involves graceful form and carefully executed maneuvers to carry out athletic stunts and beautiful performances. Gymnastics coaches understand the work it takes to perform these moves, and they provide support and encouragement for the gymnasts they work with. If you have experience as a gymnast or are familiar with the sport, you may be able to become a coach by practicing being a spotter or helping with gymnastics events. A college degree may also help you to land a job as a gymnastics coach.
Physical Education
Many gymnastics coaches have degrees in physical education. For those who want to work with younger children and students, a major in physical education with an emphasis on grades K-12 is a potential area of study. Classes involved in this major often include wellness, recreation and games, tumbling, gymnastics and aerobic activities. You may also need classes in basic first aid or CPR, and some gymnastics coaches must obtain a teaching certificate to work in the school system or as a private instructor.
Self-Enrichment Education
Those who are interested in becoming gymnastics coaches may consider a major in adult education with an emphasis on exercise science courses. This area of study will train students to coach adult gymnasts, including at the college level. Classes in this major are aimed at teaching coaches and instructors to develop lessons related to gymnastics routines, to supervise those who are learning gymnastics techniques and to evaluate performances.
USA Gymnastics
USA gymnastics is an administrative organization that promotes gymnastics in the United States. The group has a component called USA Gymnastics University, which offers educational opportunities for those interested in coaching or teaching gymnastics. Although USA Gymnastics University does not offer college courses, opportunities are available in the basics of gymnastics instruction, first aid and safety, risk management and teaching preschoolers. Courses are available online or in person at selected locations and participants who complete the courses receive certification cards.
Other Studies
According to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, you may also become a gymnastics coach if you have a bachelor's degree, even if it is not specifically related to coaching or exercise. Some people major in education to become teachers and to work as coaches part-time. Some other majors, such as nutrition, are related to gymnastics in that you must understand how to teach gymnasts to stay healthy both before and after performances. Many people who become gymnastics coaches have degrees but also have extensive experience with gymnastics, either by being former gymnasts or having worked with students on a volunteer basis.
